Destructive, generative, or both together, conflict is one of the fundamental states of the encounter between actions, forces, materials, people, viewpoints, and cultures, after which anything that participated in it changes decisively.
The Ergon Ensemble presents three compelling, contemporary musical works on the theme of conflict as a unified narrative for piano, clarinet, cello, violin, and narrator.
The works include Shattila (2004-05) by Samir Odeh-Tamimi, composed in response to the massacre in Sabra and Shatila on September 16, 1982; Stalag VIIIA (2018) by Tristan Murail, referring to the Nazi concentration camp Stalag VIII-A; and Quatuor pour la fin du temps (1940) by Olivier Messiaen, the quartet composed by the composer while he was a prisoner in the Stalag VIII-A concentration camp.
These works will be presented alongside scientific and literary excerpts, poems, and original texts about conflict then and now (and perhaps forever), curated, composed, and presented by Paris Mexis.
